Petrochemical: Shazand arak

Monoethanolamine (MEA) obtained from the reaction between ammonia and ethylene oxide.

Monoethanolamine (MEA), have a low volatility at room temperature, is hygroscopic, presents an

ammoniac odor and can appear in solid or liquid form depending on the temperature and the purity grade.

  • Gas Sweetening: MEA is commonly used in natural gas and refinery processes to remove acidic gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S), from the gas streams. This process is known as gas sweetening, as it reduces the corrosive and toxic properties of these gases, making the gas suitable for further processing and transport.

  • Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS): MEA has been utilized in the field of carbon capture and storage, where it is used to capture carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and industrial processes. The MEA solution reacts with CO2 to form a compound that can be separated and stored, preventing the release of CO2 into the atmosphere.

  • Personal Care and Pharmaceuticals: MEA is used in the formulation of various personal care products, such as shampoos, soaps, and cosmetics, as an emulsifying agent and pH adjuster. In pharmaceuticals, it can be found in some topical creams and ointments.

  • Corrosion Inhibition: MEA is also used as a corrosion inhibitor in various applications to protect metal surfaces from degradation caused by exposure to corrosive environments.

  • Textile Industry: MEA is employed in the textile industry as a softening agent and pH regulator during various dyeing and finishing processes.

  • Lubricants and Metalworking Fluids: It can be used in the formulation of lubricants and metalworking fluids to provide corrosion protection and improve lubricity.

  • Rubber Industry: MEA is utilized in the rubber industry as an accelerator in the production of rubber products.

  • Cement Industry: MEA can be used in cement grinding aids to enhance the grinding process and improve the quality of cement.
